Amazingly brilliant. Needs several visits to take in all the information. Very important to remember what these young men and women did for us. My Aunt was a wraf ops and plotter and was injured in the Battle of Britain and my uncle was in Bomber Command and is buried in a military grave in Germany. Hats off to them, we owe them so much!
Britains only museum dedicated to the Battle of Britain and it represents Britains finest hour in the most emotionally compelling way. The way each aircraft wreckage has been researched and the story of it and its pilots is told absolutely takes you back to 1940, like time travel or walking through the pages of a history book. This museum is utterly alive yet you feel you are among the history. I spent 4 hours here and could have spent another 4. A collection of artifacts like no other, helpful and informative staff, an amazing cafe and possibly the best museum shop ever! (Bring a trolley!) Thank you to everyone at Hawkinge... National Museums take note....
Think I have been three times now, great local historical resource and in other more touristy parts of the country this would be a major attraction. Nice little cafe on site and free parking. Be warned cash only for entry. Plenty of knowledgeable volunteers on site happy to engage and give more details about exhibits.
Can't rate this museum high enough. Would add more stars if I could. Dedicated to the world war two pilots it is worth a visit for the young and old. Not a big museum but if your interested in planes or WW2 or the battle of Britain it's for you. It adds to it that it was the site of an old WW2 fighter base to. Very interesting to see the uniforms planes and to read heroic and sad stories about pilots from both sides. A must see gem of a museum.
Very impressive collection of artifacts telling the stories of some of the men and machines involved in the Battle of Britain. The museum is in a corner of what was RAF Hawkinge which has now been redeveloped for housing/industrial use.What is so impressive is how the volunteers have, from the partial wreckage of a downed fighter/bomber, managed to trace the pilot and not only named him but also managed to give you details of his family life and flying career. This is a poignant reminder of what the twisted bits of metal your looking at actually represent, a bitter life or death battle for many young pilots.Go and visit and give them your support.
